In de zesde aflevering waagt Tom zich aan de handleiding Conducting an Orchestra. Hij wil het Nationaal Orkest van België, een van de meest prestigieuze orkesten van ons land, dirigeren op een klassiek topevenement. En Tom mikt meteen hoog; hij zal de Vijfde Symfonie van Beethoven brengen. Het stuk wisselt voortdurend van tempo en het is de job van de dirigent om iedereen alles tegelijk te laten doen. Niet simpel, zelfs voor een ervaren dirigent. Het boekje noemt de Vijfde zelfs “every director’s nightmare”. Dat Tom geen noot muziek kan lezen, helpt ook niet. Dirk Brossé is een van de beste dirigenten van ons land en wil Tom wel helpen, maar is toch bezorgd om Toms ambitie; de Vijfde is jaren studiewerk. Komt daarbij dat de reputatie van het Nationaal Orkest op het spel staat. Tom mag het dus niet verknallen. Dirk dompelt Tom twee weken lang onder in de wereld van de klassieke muziek. Hij laat hem eerst een strijkkwartet dirigeren en dan een orkest van conservatoriumstudenten. Pas dan mag Tom voor het Nationaal Orkest gaan staan. Tom zal enkel de eerste beweging van de Vijfde van Beethoven dirigeren. Dat is een stuk van drie minuten, maar door de tachtig muzikanten is het wel een vuistdikke partituur. Het wordt een intense voorbereiding voor Tom, met meer downs dan ups, maar het optreden ligt vast. Hoe ver hij ook staat, na twee weken moet hij de Vijfde van Beethoven brengen in Bozar in Brussel. Voor een publiek van tweeduizend klassieke muziekkenners die niet echt op iemand als Tom staan te wachten …
