Hoe straf zou het wel niet zijn als Tom echt van de schans in Garmisch-Partenkirchen zou springen? Heel straf, maar helaas onmogelijk, dacht iedereen. Tot Tom op een Duitse handleiding stootte en contact kreeg met Marc Nölke, ex-bondscoach van het Oostenrijkse schansspringteam. Marc had ook wel zijn bedenkingen bij de uitdaging, maar wilde Tom wel helpen. Liever onder zijn begeleiding springen dan alleen maar met een boekje, vond hij. Tom kan echt niet skieën en moet vanaf nul beginnen, zelfs gewoon skiën met de speciale schansspringlatten blijkt een probleem te zijn. Pas als hij dat enigszins onder knie heeft, mag hij echt beginnen te springen. Hij gaat van start met een schans van vijftien meter en bouwt van daaruit stilaan op. Tom heeft één voordeel; hij is de eerste Belg die officieel aan schansspringen doet en zodoende ook als eerste een Belgisch record kan vestigen. Hij besluit zich in te schrijven in een plaatselijke schansspringwedstrijd. Zijn tegenstanders zijn honderd Oostenrijkse kinderen. De afstand die hij op die wedstrijd springt, is 12,5 meter. Zodoende staat het officiële Belgisch record schansspringen op 12,5 meter.
