The scenic and sleepy town of Tichý Brod is shaken by the death of 11-year-old Daniel. Major Adam Hanzel, a distant stranger, and Elena Mikušová, a warm-hearted local captain, take over the investigation. Although their cooperation is extremely difficult for both of them, they quickly discover that the boy died a violent death and the investigation casts a shadow of suspicion over many of the town's inhabitants. In addition, a feisty investigative journalist, Viki, who knows about sensitive information from Adam's past, begins to take an interest in the case.

Disagreements emerge between Adam and Elena over fundamentally different perspectives on the investigation. Adam begins to suspect the parents of the murdered boy - Barbara and Marek Lichner. Elena is a family friend of the Lichners and denies that anyone close to the Lichners could have harmed Daniel. She doesn't even believe that any of the locals were capable of murdering Daniel. However, the investigation begins to confirm Adam's suspicions and reveal that almost everyone in the town is indeed hiding dark secrets of their own.

Driven investigative journalist Viki begins to investigate on her own in the small town, and not everyone appreciates her poking her nose into other people's business. Marek refuses to credibly explain the gaps in his alibi, making him the prime suspect. Tensions between Elena and Adam are intensifying, as Adam will stop at nothing, shows no regard for anyone, and even involves Elena's son Tomáš in the investigation. However, when the real reason behind the gaps in Marek's alibi is revealed—thanks to Rebeka, the owner of the local guesthouse—it causes yet another upheaval in his already struggling family.

Thanks to the investigative work of reporter Viki and Oliver, a young and ambitious local intern, the police shift their focus to pensioner Juraj Masár, who had lived in the town for years as a seemingly upstanding citizen. While the collaboration between Viki and Oliver brings them closer together, public opinion begins to turn against Juraj. Frightened by the harsh public reaction, he turns to Adam and Elena, asking them to protect him from the enraged crowd. At that moment, Marek and Barbora's daughter Ema and her boyfriend Denis unexpectedly become involved in the investigation.

The investigation into the murder of little Daniel continues to yield no results, and Elena and Adam are forced to cope with dwindling police resources. Local priest Pavol tries to bring the town together after the recent tragedies, but he himself comes under police scrutiny. Adam’s health problems are worsening, and it becomes uncertain whether he will even be able to see the investigation through to the end.

Meanwhile, Marek and Barbora are trying to save their marriage, and the intense investigation is beginning to take a toll on Elena’s relationship with her husband Jozef.
