Een jaar na de rozenrevolutie in Georgië is het tijd om een eerste balans op te maken. Slaagt de jonge, veelal in het Westen opgeleide regeringsploeg van president Saakasjvili erin de voormalige Sovjet Republiek op poten te krijgen? In de zomer van 2004 vroeg Saakasjvili de Georgisch-Russische oligarch en multimiljonair Kakha Bendookidze of hij voor zijn geboorteland wilde doen wat hij voor de zware industrie in Rusland had gedaan: de zaak economisch gezond maken. Bendookidze nam de handschoen op, en als Minister, speciaal belast met de hervorming van het land, stelde hij zich een schijnbaar eenvoudig doel: privatiseren, zoveel mogelijk (buitenlands) geld aantrekken en Georgië tot het bruisend hart van de regio maken. “Georgië is bereid alles te verkopen, behalve zijn geweten”, liet hij de wereld weten.
