He intends to resign but is persuaded by Chancellor Kohl to carry on. He stays and completely rebuilds the squad for the upcoming Euro 1996 tournament. Without Matthäus, but with key roles for Klinsmann and Sammer, it is now a "Vogts team"—one bearing his personal stamp. Unlike two years earlier, the team clicks and goes on to become European champions. The fans celebrate Vogts—until he finally steps down in 1998.
