Franz Beckenbauer managed the West German team, which included stars such as Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus and Rudi Völler. Diego Maradona captained the Argentine side who were hoping to win the World Cup for the second time in their history, having won it previously in 1978.
