The Witness

Godfrey tries to manipulate Bill out of the Roystron trial - without success. Amy goes out with a young philanderer, Alan Manning, and discovers that Tommy is drinking heavily. The Royston trial begins and Arthur finds a witness in Ballarat who can supply an alibi for Royston. Bill flies to Ballarat to bring the witness back to Melbourne. On the way home the aeroplane crashes and the witness and Bill are killed.

Jennifer, shattered, tries to hold the family together. Godfrey takes over the funeral and thankfully passes the Royston defence back to the Crown Solicitor's office. Robert discovers that a large sum of money in Bill's safekeeping has vanished. After the funeral, Jennifer approaches Godfrey about the Royston defence. Angry at her interference, he tells her that Bill has apparently embezzled a large sum of money from a client. Furthermore, other sums have mysteriously disappeared without explanation from Bill's accounts. Jennifer's financial position is precarious.

Immediately after Bill's funeral, Jennifer, despite Godfrey's objections, decides to continue with the Royston case alone, gaining the support of Arthur. Tommy's political career starts to move and Gerard reports to Godfrey with more news about the missing money.

While she and Arthur continue to gather evidence for Mrs Talbot's case of fraud against Adrian Lonsdale, Jennifer cuts herself off from the Carson family by accepting Vic's proposal to move to his house. Amy continues her rather rocky relationship with Alan Manning, a friend of Tommy's. Robert, in an ill-timed move, tells Billy of his father's supposed guilt where the missing money is concerned.

Jennifer wins the Talbot case and after some family upset and Eileen's departure, begins to move to Vic's house. Gerard reports to Godfrey on the Alan Manning - Amy relationship and on Robert's gaffe to Billy. Amy is furious and Robert is berated by Godfrey. Taking advantage of Jennifer's departure, Margery successfully pushes for the purchase of Bill's house for Robert and herself.

The ramifications of Edgar's rumoured 'illness' are canvassed publicly and Edgar is put to the test at a dinner at Godfrey's in the presence of Sir Humphrey Moore. In effect he is forced to resign - leaving the way clear for Tommy to stand at the election. Sarah goes to stay at Godfrey's for a weekend and announces her intention to stay permanently.

A new client comes to Jennifer with a case involving child custody and wife-beating. Arthur copes with his father's displeasure when he learns Arthur has resigned from Carson and Carson and is working for Jennifer. Meanwhile Godfrey tries to get Arthur to rejoin the firm. Sarah decides she'd like to move in to the Godfrey Carson house on a permanent basis and Jennifer agrees to let her stay with her grandfather until the accommodation problems at Vic's have been resolved.
