Season 1
Episodes

The Clan, Part 1
We meet all the members of the Carson family. Godfrey reluctantly allows Jennifer to join Carson and Carson as a Solicitor. To the consternation of the family, Godfrey announces his engagement to Felicity Bryce, the widowed daughter of the influential Sir Humphrey Moore.

The Clan, Part 2
Jennifer becomes involved in a notorious child murder case. She pursuades Bill to undertake the defence of the accused, George Royston. There is an angry confrontation between Bill and Godfrey, when Godfrey hears this news.

The Witness
Godfrey tries to manipulate Bill out of the Roystron trial - without success. Amy goes out with a young philanderer, Alan Manning, and discovers that Tommy is drinking heavily. The Royston trial begins and Arthur finds a witness in Ballarat who can supply an alibi for Royston. Bill flies to Ballarat to bring the witness back to Melbourne. On the way home the aeroplane crashes and the witness and Bill are killed.

Requiem
Jennifer, shattered, tries to hold the family together. Godfrey takes over the funeral and thankfully passes the Royston defence back to the Crown Solicitor's office. Robert discovers that a large sum of money in Bill's safekeeping has vanished. After the funeral, Jennifer approaches Godfrey about the Royston defence. Angry at her interference, he tells her that Bill has apparently embezzled a large sum of money from a client. Furthermore, other sums have mysteriously disappeared without explanation from Bill's accounts. Jennifer's financial position is precarious.

Case Deferred
Immediately after Bill's funeral, Jennifer, despite Godfrey's objections, decides to continue with the Royston case alone, gaining the support of Arthur. Tommy's political career starts to move and Gerard reports to Godfrey with more news about the missing money.

The Royston Trial
Jennifer, despite the continued objections of the Carson family, continues to fight but ultimately loses the Royston case. However, Arthur joins her business on a permanent basis and together they get their first client - Mrs Emily Talbot.

An English Gentleman
While she and Arthur continue to gather evidence for Mrs Talbot's case of fraud against Adrian Lonsdale, Jennifer cuts herself off from the Carson family by accepting Vic's proposal to move to his house. Amy continues her rather rocky relationship with Alan Manning, a friend of Tommy's. Robert, in an ill-timed move, tells Billy of his father's supposed guilt where the missing money is concerned.

Foxtrot
Jennifer wins the Talbot case and after some family upset and Eileen's departure, begins to move to Vic's house. Gerard reports to Godfrey on the Alan Manning - Amy relationship and on Robert's gaffe to Billy. Amy is furious and Robert is berated by Godfrey. Taking advantage of Jennifer's departure, Margery successfully pushes for the purchase of Bill's house for Robert and herself.

The Medicine Man
Jennifer and her children move into Vic's house and Sarah discovers some of her friends are snobs. Jennifer becomes involved with a man who claims to be a homeopathic doctor and reveals him to be a charlatan. Godfrey goes to the races and arranges for Tommy to meet with Edgar Swann M.P.

Which Doctor
Sarah's friend Louise Cartwright becomes seriously ill and a proper doctor is called. Cartwright decides to sue "the quack" and asks Jennifer to prosecute. Amy's affair with Alan reaches a desultory dead end.

Swan Song, Part 1
Gerard discovers that Edgar Swann is going to have a minor operation. He propagates the rumour that Edgar's health is failing badly. Eileen returns to Vic's and Sarah finds it difficult to accept the cramped conditions in Collingwood.

Swan Song, Part 2
The ramifications of Edgar's rumoured 'illness' are canvassed publicly and Edgar is put to the test at a dinner at Godfrey's in the presence of Sir Humphrey Moore. In effect he is forced to resign - leaving the way clear for Tommy to stand at the election. Sarah goes to stay at Godfrey's for a weekend and announces her intention to stay permanently.

Happy Families
A new client comes to Jennifer with a case involving child custody and wife-beating. Arthur copes with his father's displeasure when he learns Arthur has resigned from Carson and Carson and is working for Jennifer. Meanwhile Godfrey tries to get Arthur to rejoin the firm. Sarah decides she'd like to move in to the Godfrey Carson house on a permanent basis and Jennifer agrees to let her stay with her grandfather until the accommodation problems at Vic's have been resolved.
