Gloria fights for life as the truth hits home for Eric and Ashley. Gloria comes round in hospital to find Ashley at her bedside, and, mistakenly, believes him to have been the one who saved her. When Ashley explains otherwise, Gloria is pleasantly surprised. She wouldn't have thought of Eric as her knight in shining armour, but she sees a side of him that wasn't apparent before. It soon becomes clear that trying to kill herself wasn't the answer and her friends rallied round her. She then realises she should have turned to them in the first place and is very happy to have the chance to accept their offers of help. It feels good to have off-loaded the guilt she was harbouring. Meanwhile, there's gossip in the village as the Sugdens return from Spain and Tricia’s miffed when Cain and Zak arrive bearing unwanted gifts for her and Marlon.

Gloria is discharged from hospital following her suicide attempt and stays at the vicarage, much to the surprise of the entire village. Paddy’s stunned to hear from Zoe about Gloria and blames Eric for her despair, but when Eric feels no sympathy and intimates that Paddy had at one point felt like Gloria did after Mandy left him, Paddy, enraged, grabs him and furiously tells Eric that he doesn't know how he felt, but that is not the case. Eric tells a stunned Paddy that he, too, tried to kill himself. Robert finds Richie in the street and demands to know who killed Sarah, but when Richie refuses to divulge who did it, Robert hurls a rock through Richie's car window. Alan questions Jack over his intentions towards Diane, but Jack assures him that he hasn't got any.

Ready for a meeting, Richie is furious to find that his car window has been smashed in and calls Angie. He points her in Robert's direction, as he was Richie's only visitor last night. Jack is surprised to find out that Robert visited Richie and he talks to the boys about who smashed the window. Robert owns up, telling Jack that he visited Richie because he wanted to know who killed Sarah. Jack is furtherly devastated when Andy, worried that the trial was going against his father, admits that he told Richie that he started the fire. Meanwhile, Gloria’s surprised by a guilty proposal from Eric and Rodney senses there’s something going on between Diane and Alan.

Bernice spends the day threatening about names for the baby; she doesn't want anything too common. Business is lacking at Chez Marlon and Tricia isn't the favourite person on everyone's list. In an attempt to help Marlon, she humiliatingly asks for her job back at The Woolpack, whom Bernice refuses. The lads from Tenant House and Ashley put on their running shoes and compete through a jog around the village. Rodney lets slip to Tricia that Diane may be playing both Alan and Jack at the same time. Tricia heatedly confronts Diane about this in front of a crowd in the pub, and is once again humiliated when the whole thing turns out to be a sham. With her life sloping down quicker than the speed of light, Tricia sulks in her own misery.

Tricia is reeling with embarrassment after the events of the previous day. Bernice is shocked to find out Carlos has stayed the night at The Vicarage and decides Nicola has outstayed her welcome. She persuades Diane to take Nicola up at the pub. Diane's seedy love life is at the height of gossip throughout the village, and when Viv lets onto Richie that her and Jack may have been at it when Sarah was still alive, he is furious and releases his temper out on Diane in the Woolpack. Alan lets known to Tricia how truly disappointed he is with her recent actions. Diane gives Rodney a piece of her mind and he too has a few insults to trade. Bernice decides that Tricia has truly run her course with her mouth and sets out on a confrontation.

Bernice's world comes crashing down around her when, already reeling from her row with Tricia, she goes to the hospital for her first scan - only to be told she has lost the baby. When she and Ashley arrive at the hospital for the scan, they don't even consider the possibility that something could be wrong - they're too busy chatting about how happy they are. But when the nurse performing the scan hurries off to fetch a doctor, Bernice soon realises that something is very wrong, and it's not long before her worst fears are confirmed. Bernice has what is called a missed miscarriage - she probably miscarried a few days earlier, but the baby hasn't come away properly yet, which is why she hadn't realised. At first she thinks they've made a mistake, and she goes into denial. The final seeds of mistrust are sown between Marlon and Tricia when she admits that she had slept with Gavin.

Bernice is in complete shock with the news of her miscarriage. Ashley tries to keep a brave face on for the sake of his wife, but there's only little time he can keep up the act. She wants to keep a low-profile, but when the news is broken too everyone, her family rally around her. Tricia confides in Terry about being the unpopular source of the village. He reassures her that she's loved. However, when she makes the mistake of bringing Bernice flowers without knowing of her miscarriage, receiving a scolding from Rodney and being neglected from Marlon for the second time, Tricia walks out on her nearest and dearest. Bob tries to flog a cupid table to Carol through Terry, with the thinking mind of helping Viv, despite her and Carol's brooding conflict. Chris cancels a night with Charity once again and she's bored of playing second best with his business. She decides to spend the night entertaining Scott in Chez Marlon, despite Chris later changing his mind.

He rifles through them and finds a small card that tells him that she's safe and well, but requests that he does not try to look for her as she is better off without him, much to his dismay. He heads to The Woolpack to show Alan, who tells him that she has, at least, made the effort to contact him, but advises him to give her time. Meanwhile, Bernice expresses her surprise about Edna's comforting words, while the reality of the miscarriage hits home for Ashley when young mother Sharon brings her daughter round to the vicarage and he breaks down in Bernice's arms. Elsewhere, Jack’s forced to face the reality of selling the farm and Andrew’s caught in the feud between Chris and Tara.

Chris’ uncontrollable jealousy overwhelms him and he gets the wrong end of the stick when Zoe mentions that Terry has been spending a lot of time with Charity, especially since Terry keeps getting sent to check up on her. His jealousy goes too far when he accuses Terry of having an affair with Charity. Terry is furious at the accusation and resigns.Jack avoids telling the boys the truth about the farm when he gets dressed up in a suit and tie and lies that he's going off to an auction for farm implements. In the Woolpack, he tells Betty, Seth and Alan that he actually went to the job centre, but had no luck. Meanwhile, there's much speculation about Paddy and Emily.

While Jack is working out on the farm, he finds a body lying amongst the hay and is shocked to discover it is his cellmate Harry. Harry stirs and Jack takes him indoors to warm up. Following a hot bath, Harry explains that he was released after serving his sentence while on remand, but his family isn't interested in him, so he thought he could count on Jack for a bed for the night. After acquainting himself with the kids, he tells Jack the real reason why he's there - to give Jack £3000 in used notes. Chris is forced to concede that he made a mistake in accusing Terry of having an affair with Charity, and heads round to persuade Terry to come back to work, even using a bottle of malt whiskey as a peace offering. Betty’s on the trail of some hot gossip and delights in telling Bev about Emily lodging with Paddy.

The Dingles get a shock when Sam unexpectedly returns. He feels that because he's Zak's only son and heir now that Butch is gone, he's let the family down by abandoning them, but Zak and Lisa feel awkward, knowing that they have something big to tell him. Cain comes back from seeing Angie, and Sam wonders why he's still here, but he's in for a surprise when Cain says, "'Ey up, bruv." Meanwhile, Jack wrestles with temptation regarding the counterfeit money that Harry left for him and he confides in Seth, feeling that the money might be able to keep the farm running for another couple of months. He heads into the barn and retrieves the fake money, just as Angie and a colleague arrive. Elsewhere, Gloria returns to work at the vet's surgery, but starts to feel the strain when she's forced to make a difficult choice.

The Dingles laugh complimenting him on being so funny. In the Reynolds' kitchen, Ollie teases Marc about being bored as he has no school to go to. Len enters the kitchen following Angie, he is saying that he wants to see Lady Tara but Angie doesn't appreciate it when he asks if she is really that good looking

Eric continues to undermine the Dingles' attempts to finish the barn on time so that they incur penalties. He heads round to the homestead, picks up their tools and puts them in his car. Inside the house, the Dingles are suffering from a hangover. Jason arrives and reminds them that 5pm is the deadline. When they head outside to continue on with the work, Zak, Lisa and Jason realise their tools have been stolen. The building inspector comes round and proclaims that the building is up to standards and will overlook the drains since Eric is a county councillor, but Eric insists he must check the drains. Eric tells the Dingles that they will not get paid since they won't have finished the work by the end of the day. Meanwhile, Emily moves out of Paddy and Jason's to lodge with the Sugdens and Marc’s surprised by an unexpected offer he can’t refuse.

Cain sees Sam and goes to hit him. Zak splits them up and says Sam can go along too. Gloria is cleaning in Eric's house. They chat about Michael and the little things that will impress him. At breakfast at the Reynolds', Len says that he saw Viv last night and she mentioned that Donna and Marc had been in her house alone. Marc is elusive. Meanwhile, Viv is telling Donna off at breakfast about spending time with Marc. Donna arrives at the Reynolds house and listens to Marc and Jonny talking about her and Bev. Jonny jumps to the conclusion that Marc and Bev are together. Andy gives Jack £20 for the bills, they claim they have saved up the pocket money which Kathy gave them whilst he was in prison. Virginia gets cross with Andrew for staring at Charity. Donna is sitting on a bench in the village and watches Bev go into the Woolpack. Donna storms into the Woolpack and yells at Bev, asking her what is going on with her and Marc. With his financial problems mounting, Jack comes under increasing pressure to use the money that Harry had given him. But unbeknown to him, the decision has been taken out of his hands, thanks to his children. Faced with expensive repairs on his tractor, Jack decides to dip in to Harry's money. But he is shocked to discover that the cash had gone missing and he immediately suspects Andy. Jack confronts him and was mortified to hear that Andy had given it to Cain. Charity tells Chloe that Zoe is the mystery person. Eric causes a catastrophe outside the factory when he parks his car in the driveway, leaving the Dingles unable to get out. In act of revenge, both Zak and Cain both clamp his car and demand £50 to revert their doings. Meanwhile, Tricia is still nowhere to be found and Chez Marlon is slowly but shortly disappearing from the radar.

Terry begins to become impatient with Carol when she flirts with the customers, and when she tells one of Terry's mates that her and Terry aren't a partnership, he walks out on her.

Eric is disturbed when Sam tells him that Zak is convinced that he is responsible for grassing them up to the authorities. Sam demands that he gives him a proper job or he will help his father get his revenge on him. Zak approaches Charity and questions her about being visited by a D.S.S. officer. She pleads her innocence and he is stunned when she told him that Cain has already betrayed him by sitting on a pile of cash that he stole from her. Zak returns home and confronts Cain, who tries to convince his father that Charity is lying. But Zak finds the cash. Elsewhere, Bernice moves into the pub and closer to Carlos, while Carol faces the harsh reality of being a landlady.

Later, Cain heads round to Charity's house and after an argument he slaps her across the face. Carol and Viv are at it again much to the dismay of Terry and Bob. And Carol sinks to the lowest of the low when she vindictively revealed that Viv is really 45 and not 39 as she says, but Bob reveals he knew Viv's age all along.

It is Tricia’s birthday and Marlon is upset when Jason shows his face in his restaurant. A heated exchange ensues in which Marlon blames him for Tricia running away. But Marlon is stunned when Rodney admits that he had his own argument with her on the day she left.

Viv is suitably furious and confronts Bob in a rage, demanding an explanation, but in the end it turns out that Bob wasn't seeing another woman, he was visiting his sister-in-law and his kids from his previous marriages. Diane overhears a conversation between Bernice and Carlos and is disturbed by its tone. She becomes increasingly suspicious as she watches them closely together. Eric convinces Gloria to return to the factory and gave her a promotion. He later sacks Edna.

Cain and Angie arrange a secret liaison, but she is forced to stand him up when Ollie returns home upset, after her exams went badly. Cain is furious when Angie fails to show. On his way home, he is stopped by the police and questioned about a robbery. Intent on getting his own back, he tells the police officer that he has an alibi; he was with Angie. Angie is shocked when there was a knock at the door and she finds Cain and a police officer standing before her. Angie lies and tells the police that she was with Cain earlier in the day. With her daughter's betrayal weighing heavily on her mind, Diane turns to Jack for advice. She tells him that she intends to confront Carlos about his affair with Bernice, and Jack warns her to be careful about interfering. Diane finds Carlos in the Woolpack and he is left devastated when she makes it clear that his affair with her daughter must end. Andy regrets getting involved with Cain when he forces him to hide some contraband cigarettes.

Angie escapes on foot with Cain in hot pursuit, determined that if he can't have Angie - nobody can. Lisa is concerned over Zak's mood. She is further worried when he reappears after having a bath and storms out of the house a worried man. Diane is struggling behind the bar and arranges for a temporary barmaid to lighten the load. Louise the barmaid proves to be a big hit with the menfolk of Emmerdale, with her stunning looks and memory for names. Her arrival makes Nicola feel put out. Charity persuades Chris to give her a night to herself, although it's really to be with Zoe. Chris tells Richie he can meet with a major client on his own.

Marlon tries to convince Zak to share his problems with Lisa. Irritated by Marlon's interference, Zak leaves the Woolpack, and with nowhere else to go, decides to head home. He arrives and tries to apologise to Lisa through a locked door. Hopeful of reconciliation, she opens the door, but is stunned to find that Zak has suddenly changed his mind.

Bernice is facing a huge test when Diane is forced to leave her and Carlos alone. There is high tension and a sense that both are deliberately hiding their feelings. As if Bernice's life wasn't complicated enough, she now has to deal with the fact that her father Rodney is going out with Louise, the barmaid employed to help out while she was away. She turns to Diane but her mum is contemptuous of her former husband's antics. Jack upsets Diane by taking her wig off as a joke and Lisa becomes increasingly frustrated by her inability to stand up to Cain's bullying. Zak's irrational behaviour continues when he loses his temper in the Woolpack and then leaves, embarrassed. Diane ditches her wig, dyes her hair blond and comes clean about her affair with Jack. Spurned lover Cain seems set on destroying the Reynolds family when he turns his attentions from terrorising Angie to making a play for her teenage daughter, Ollie. During a game of truth or dare with her friends, Ollie gets upset when Ben asks her if she was still a virgin. A shocked Ollie runs out of the house and straight into Cain who is lurking outside. Cain wins Ollie's confidence by giving her some advice and soon there's a distinctly flirtatious atmosphere between the pair.

When he comes round from the operation, Zak is relieved when the doctor tells him that his chances are good. Charity becomes increasingly irritated by Zoe's surprise visits to see her at work. Feeling smothered, Charity sees a way of escaping Zoe's possessiveness when Chris agrees to take her away on holiday. Andy gets himself in hot water when he is caught selling cigarettes in school. But the prospect of detention becomes more pleasant when he discovers that Katie Addyman will be joining him. Following Len's interview with the police, Sean fails to understand why Cain is not going to be charged over Len's assault. She becomes increasingly vindictive towards him and demands that Zoe gets to the bottom of how the injury happened. Marlon is annoyed when he discovers that Carlos had replaced him at Chez Marlon and is only too happy to accept his old job back at The Woolpack.

Virginia is furious and slaps Tara. A fight develops and a humiliated Virginia is taken away in a police car. Carlos remains firm that he doesn't want to move in with Nicola, even though his feelings for her remain unchanged. An upset Nicola finds a shoulder to cry on in Emily. Will Carlos ever make that extra commitment? Len arrives back home and is pleased to find Angie and Sean reconciled.

Cain offers no resistance as Sean beats him to a pulp, simply encouraging bystanders to witness what was happening. Emmerdale's teenagers are gearing themselves up for their big night out on the town - blissfully unaware of the horror that lies in wait for them. The evening doesn't go well for Andy who is barred from entering the nightclub and forced to tramp the streets as his friends and even his girlfriend dance the night away inside. Andy has to resort to some chips and a can of 'Safeway' lemonade from the club, brought out by Donna. He then goes walkabout and gets the blame as they miss the last bus home and in a desperate bid to impress Katie, Robert, Eve, Donna, Marc and Ollie, he sets about stealing a car. Against their better judgement and with Marc at the wheel, the gang of seven then begin a joyride home that quickly turns to tragedy and so begins a living hell. Nicola has returned refreshed from her time away and confirms to Carlos that she is pregnant.

Bernice tries desperately to smile through the pain and confusion she is feeling but finds herself preoccupied by the news that Nicola is carrying Carlos's baby. Cain fears that somebody is onto his counterfeit money scam when he discovers a mysterious envelope in his pocket.

Marc walks in to the police station and confesses that he was solely responsible for the accident, which killed Miss Strickland. But his attempt to protect his friends is destroyed when Eve arrives and admits that he was not the only one involved. Marlon is relieved when Tricia tells him that she will be able to divorce Joe without any problems. But he is knocked for six when she asks him to marry her.

Zoe is devastated that her relationship with Chris has reached an all-time low and Paddy visits his solicitor to start divorce proceedings. Bernice is amused to discover that Diane and Rodney have spent the night together. Embarrassed by their night of passion, Diane makes Rodney promise to keep their indiscretion a secret. Thinking he was in Ireland, Lisa and Zak become increasingly concerned for Sam's safety when a letter arrives for him from his mum making it clear that he hasn't been near the emerald isle. Zak confronts Cain and demands to know why he lied about Sam's whereabouts. Zak decides to go in search of Sam but, before he leaves, he warns Cain that he will make him pay if anything has happened. The teenagers conquer their fears and return to school. But the experience is too much for Donna, who bolts from the classroom. Cynthia seeks reassurance from Danny that he wasn't involved in the hit and run tragedy.

Zak drafts in the help of Marlon, Jack and Eric to scour the woods in the hope of finding Sam. Cain starts a hunt of his own in a bid to find him ahead of Zak and stop him revealing the reason for his disappearance. Zak unearths Sam first and is horrified to find out why he fled the family home. But Cain hits back with claims that Sam tried to attack him first and Zak finds himself torn between his two sons. After much convincing from Lisa, Zak tells Cain to get out. Andy isn't faring much better with Katie as he tries to convince her to stand by him. Things are looking up for Paddy, though, when Emily admits that she is starting to feel like his house is becoming her home and time looks like it is running out for the Daggerts when they get an unexpected caller at their squat.

Poor Emily is beside herself with worry when Paddy meets Mandy to sort out the future. It's enough that the estranged couple are meeting at the vets surgery, where Emily is made to feel like a spare part. But when she later walks into The Woolpack and finds them continuing their conversation - she suspects Mandy has designs on rekindling her relationship with Paddy. Away from Emily's ears, Mandy confesses she still loves Paddy and wants to get back together. Scott is upset when Chloe tells him living together might spoil their relationship. Maggie impresses Rodney by suggesting they open the holiday village for Xmas and newly appointed bar manager Nicola lets her heart rule her head when she asks Craig to work behind the bar.

Maggie is annoyed that Nicola employed Craig without telling her and exacts revenge immediately by signing up Chloe to work behind the bar with the blessing of Rodney.

Mandy manages to drive a wedge between Paddy and Emily, then skilfully moves in for the kill. Emily decides to visit Paddy to try and make things up after a row about the previous evening. Chris is stunned to learn that Charity has invited a society magazine to cover the wedding and Rodney feels the strain caused by the age difference with Louise.

Zak and Zoe share their concerns over the wedding. Aware that the gulf between Charity and the Dingles is growing, Lisa reminds Zak of his recent cancer scare, and tells him that life is too short to waste on feuding. With her words of wisdom ringing in his ears, Zak eventually relents and agrees to attend. Charity fears the worst when the Dingles arrive at the reception and Zak demands to speak to Chris alone. In the cold light of day, Kathy begins to realise the serious consequences of bringing her niece back to Britain without her mother's permission. Kathy seeks advice from a solicitor. She admits that she suspected that Alice was being mistreated, but her hopes are dealt a massive blow when the solicitor tells her that without proof of abuse, Kathy could face charges of child abduction. The situation becomes even more volatile when Alan tells Kathy that he has received a telephone call from Elsa and she will be arriving in the village tomorrow. Angie is consumed by guilt when Marc tells the Youth Offending Officer that his parents marriage break up has deeply affected him. Len reassures Angie that she isn't a bad parent, but his words are unable to soothe her pain. Jack is left frustrated when he is unable to get a verbal decision from the Mobile phone representative, as to whether they are going to put a mast on his farm.

Kathy continues to harbour Alice as those closest to her voice their concern and start to question her actions. Alan tries to assure Elsa that Kathy will return her daughter soon, but she decides it is time to call in the police. At the Reynolds', Marc tries to look to the future and put the death of Miss Strickland behind him, but his solicitor has a word of warning for him that brings him back down to earth with a bump. He advises Sean and Angie that Ollie will probably face a light sentence for her part in the tragedy - but Marc could well be facing a stiff stint inside. With eviction from the squat on the horizon, a desperate Cynthia is forced to consider accepting Ashley's offer of help when she learns that the housing office hasn't found a new home for her family. Edna becomes increasingly irate at Jack's insistence to push ahead with plans for the phone mast and takes her petition door-to-door.

The thought of facing a future in prison proves too much for Marc and he decides he has only one option - to run away. Ollie and Andy learn of his plans but nothing they say can change Marc's drastic escape plan. He heads for Sean's haulage yard in the hope of stowing away in the back of a truck destined for the continent. But as the wagon leaves the yard, Sean charges after it and brings it to a halt. Has he rumbled his son? Much to the disgust of Cynthia, Danny agrees to deliver a package for Ray. Cynthia confides in Ashley that she doesn't trust Emmerdale's new Mr Big and she is shocked when she sneaks a peak inside the parcel. Alan overhears the Sugden children talking in the shop and realises that Kathy is hiding at the farm with Alice. As Kathy and Alice visit Nick in prison, Alan feels it is his duty to let Elsa know where she can find her daughter.
