Inside the Crown: Secrets of the Royals - Season 1

Harry and Meghan are the latest royal love story. Theirs is the new fairy-tale romance that has fascinated the world, but after the excitement of the wedding the reality of the job kicks in. Will the couple be able to balance the pressures of love versus duty? For them only time will tell, but history has shown that royal marriage is a hard road to walk.

This episode focuses on the royals' rollercoaster relationship with the press, beginning with the Queen's 1953-1954 Commonwealth tour, when cameramen worked hand-in-hand with the palace. A few years later, newspaper owner Lord Altrincham was attacked for daring to publish criticisms of the Queen, but by the mid-1970s Princess Margaret's hedonistic lifestyle was the subject of increasing press attention. But that was only the beginning. In the 1990s, the press has a field day over the breakdown of Charles and Diana's marriage, feeding on royal scandals.

This episode explores how the Queen has handled some of the greatest trials and tribulations of her reign, from national disasters like Aberfan and Grenfell to personal tragedies like the murder of Lord Mountbatten and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. 

Documentary revealing how Queen Elizabeth II has mastered the art of being a monarch, both home and abroad, over her record-breaking 68-year reign. She is seen meeting world leaders such as Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev and Donald Trump - although not all encounters go well, and the film also looks at the Queen's commitment to the Commonwealth, a personal project that has seen the old Empire transformed.
