Jim recovers in hospital where he has to suffer the doubts of his colleagues and a step son who is accusing him of battering Marie. When the truth comes out Jim realises that he can't stay married to his abusive alcoholic wife. He knows that he will have to be cruel to be kind but can Jim be convinced that making an official complaint against her is the best way she will receive help? PC Gabriel Kent is desperate to cover up his attack on Jim and panics when Marie makes a complaint against his assault. Gabriel relies on emotional game playing, tampering with evidence and a lot of good fortune to divert all suspicions. Gabriel threatens to hand in his resignation but when Sergeant June Ackland proves that she trusts him he retracts it and their relationship progresses to the next level.
