Penny's world is turned upside down when two new kids, Maya and her brother KG, move into the neighborhood and immediately re-shuffle the fragile status quo. Maya, who personifies "wokeness," deems Penny (and her friends) unworthy of her friendship because she considers them too superficial. Penny, desperate to prove her wrong, finds herself on the wrong side of a scheme to free a giant panda from the local zoo. Meanwhile, Dijonay, LaCienega and Zoey are vying for the affection of KG.

Penny's friends become obsessed with Makeup Boy, an online makeup influencer whose brash opinions on feminine beauty rub Penny the wrong way. Scared of their friend, Penny's crew plot to take her down a notch before everyone and everything is canceled.
